From History of Jasper Co, GA:

Elijah Cornwell was a farmer, large land owner, a soldier in the American Revolution and fought in General Greene's army. He was granted a tract of land near Mechanicsville, Jasper Co, GA for services in the war. He died there on 16 November 1927. He was originally from South Carolina. (Joseph Davis Cornwell, Sr)

JDC Sr also states Elijah's wife was Catherine Cavanaugh, not Catherine Cavender as the History of Jasper Co record has it . The DAR also records Elijah's wife as Catherine Cavanaugh. Cavanaugh is a common and accepted variant of Cavender. (JDC III)

Elijah Cornwell, the first member of the family to reside in this area, came to what is now Jasper Co. in the fall of 1797. He came from Dinwiddie Co. VA where he married Catherine Cavender in 1783. They first moved to NC where their first five children were born. From Rowan Co NC the family moved to Pendleton District SC and from there to Jackson Co, GA in 1802 -- then to Jasper Co where he purchased land along the Alcovy River that is now a part of the Turtle Cove Development. The family lived on and farmed this land until Catherine's death. Both Elijah Cornwell (1760-1827) and Catherine Cavender (1764-1853) are buried at the Old Cornwell Cemetery. To them were born 10 children: Elizabeth b. 1784 NC, Sarah b. 1786 NC, Nancy b. 1788 NC, Eli b. 1790 NC, Elijah Jr b. 1794 NC, Catherine b. ca. 1796 SC, Triphena (Bethinis-Thenia) b. 1798 SC, Hiram b. 1804 Jackson Co GA., Obadiah Cornwell, and George Washington Washington Cornwell (b. 1808 in Jasper Co, GA)
