Florence True Eckel, 105, of Amarillo died Wednesday, Dec. 3, 2008.

Florence True Eckel was born Aug. 24, 1903, in Grand Island, Neb. She was preceded in death by her husband, John Glenn Eckel, who died in 1990. They met as students at the University of Colorado and were married for 68 years.
Mrs. Eckel was active in Girl Scouts for more than 20 years; she was president of the Girl Scout Council in 1947-48 and led the first Senior Scout troop in Amarillo. She also was active in the Daughters of the American Revolution, being regent of two chapters, organizing member of a third and a state chairman for 15 years. She also belonged to several bridge groups and played - and won - until after her 100th birthday.
Florence's great passions were reading and history - especially about European history, the early history of the United States and the American Revolution. Her encyclopedic knowledge of that history never ceased to amaze her family and friends - especially as she was able to trace her family's lineage across many centuries and continents. This zeal for learning inspired her family to pursue a broad variety of academic pursuits.
Survivors include a son, John R. Eckel of Houston; two daughters, Anne Treichler of Lake Jackson and Katherine Diem of San Antonio; nine grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren - and she will be remembered lovingly as "Grammy Florence" and "Mammy" by all of them.
The family suggests memorials be to Presbyterian Children's Home, 3400 S. Bowie St., Amarillo, TX 79109.
