William R. Ausenbaum passed away at the Veterans Home of California, after a long and courageous battle with ALS.
Bill studied business administration before enlisting in the service after the outbreak of WW II. He served with distinction in the 325th Glider Infantry Regiment of the 82nd Airborne Division and took part in the Normandy invasion in June 1944, landing behind enemy lines in a glider. He went on to take part in operations in Holland and Belgium, taking command of Company B in the Ardennes on January 5th, 1945. He was made Captain at the Battle of the Bulge and was later relieved of this assignment in Berlin in October, 1945. He was awarded the Silver Star, the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart. Bill was discharged in 1946 and remained active in various associations related to his military service his entire life.
Bill had a fulfilling career in sales and management with the R.T. French Company before retiring in California. He was a world-class traveler, bon vivant, gentleman, reader, music lover, and maker of a great dry martini. His sense of humor was legendary and he maintained it to the end.
Beloved brother, brother-in-law, uncle, friend, and patriot, Bill will be missed and never forgotten by that world-wide network of friends and his family.
A Service of Remembrance will be held on Thursday, January 12, 2006, in the Veterans Home Memorial Chapel, Yountville, California, at 10:00 a.m. (707) 944-4840.
