John A. Baldwin, Sr., age 78 of Tucker, passed away peacefully at his home Sunday morning, June 5, 2005, after a brave and valiant battle with oral cancer. He was a soldier until the end.
John was a native Atlantan who grew up in West End. He was the fifth of seven children born to Nellie Elizabeth Baldwin and Kelsie James Baldwin. He was a graduate of Tech High School and attended Georgia State University. He was a long-time member of Briarcliff United Methodist Church. John served in the U.S. Army during both World War II and the Korean Conflict as a member of the military police. During World War II, he was stationed in Germany at a castle in Bernried, Germany. He was on guard during the Nuremberg Trials.
John retired from Sears, Roebuck and Company after 42 years of service. John was a classic southern gentleman who was extremely devoted to his family. He was a very private, introspective and sincere person with a wisdom few possess. He spoke with a gentle Southern accent of which he was proud. He will be sorely missed by family and friends and his little dog Zeus. John is survived by his wife of 46 years, Karleen Guess Baldwin, his son John A. Baldwin, Jr., and wife, Traci, his daughter Deborah Baldwin Stanhouse and husband, Jim. He is also survived by three brothers: Douglas G. Baldwin, Harry J. Baldwin and Thomas E. Baldwin, as well as a host of nieces and nephews.
"God saw that he was getting tired, a cure was not to be. So he put his arms around him and whispered 'Come with me.' With tearful eyes we watched him suffer and saw him fade away. Although we loved him dearly, we could not make him stay. A golden heart stopped beating, Hard-working hands to rest; God broke our hearts to prove to us He only takes the best." John was an unfaltering soldier, husband, father and friend who was loyal until the end. Well done good and faithful servant. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, June 8 at 11 o'clock at Briarcliff United Methodist Church with Reverend Sondra R. Jones officiating. Inurnment Westview Cemetery. The family will receive friends Tuesday evening from 6 to 8 at H.M. Patterson & Son, Oglethorpe Hill, 4550 Peachtree Road, 404-261-3510.
