James was the son of Rev. Nathaniel A. Adams & Catherine Winford Barker. He married Melinda Cannon on 09 February 1827 in Habersham Co., GA and they had twelve children.
James began his ministry in the Ellijay Baptist Church in Murray Co, just north of Gordon Co. He was also pastor of the Pleasant Valley Church 1848-1849 and the first pastor of the Mt Pisgah Bapt Church established in 1849.
