When Joshua Peter Coffer was born in 1838 in Missouri, his father, Joshua Coffer, was 28 and his mother, Elizabeth "Crain" Coffer, was 56. He married Sarah Eveline Boyd on December 18, 1859, in Sainte Genevieve, Missouri. They had two children during their marriage. He died as a young father on January 20, 1865, in Nashville, Tennessee, at the age of 27.
