NOTE: Bryan William Ball's true birth year is believed to be 1900.
His "Certificate of Membership" into the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (North Carolina Conference) is dated July 26, 1909, when he would have been 8-1/2. This conforms to the earliest children are baptized in the Church of Latter Day Saints (age 8).
The 1910 Census says Bryan was 9 years old in May of 1910 (turning 10 in December 1910).
His War World I registration card is dated September 12, 1918. According to his "Continuous Service Certificate" from the Department of the Navy, his "date of entry for continuous service" was November 14, 1919.

BRYAN W. BALL

Bryan W. Ball, 65, 512 N. 24th St., Van Buren, died Thursday. Mr. Ball, a resident of Van Buren for the past five years, was formerly on the faculty of the University of Houston, teaching in the engineering department.

A retired U.S. Navy Lieutenant, he was a member of the Houston Elks Club, the Van Buren Lions Club, Crawford County Conservation League and served as chairman of the building committee of the Van Buren Boys Club. He was a member of the Church of Latter Day Saints.

Survivors include his widow, Jeanne; two sons, Gary and Bradley of the home; his mother, Mrs. Joe Marlow of Maravian N.C.; and a brother, J.A. Ball of Kannapolis, N.C.

The body is at Ocker Funeral Home. Funeral plans are incomplete.

B.W. "Bill" Ball was also survived by two daughters from a previous marriage to Lucy Ellen Marlow Ball (later McGuskie). Their names are Helen Ball Smith (Mrs. Bert Lowe Smith) and Frieda Vivian Ball Ralphs (Mrs. Seeley Elwin Ralphs).

Funeral service for B.W. Ball, 65, 512 N. 24th Street, Van Buren, will be held at 11 a.m. Monday (September 20th) at National Cemetery, Fort Smith. Rev. Charles Graves, pastor of First Baptist Church, Van Buren, will officiate. Ocker Funeral Home is in charge.

A military service will be held by member of the U.S. Naval Training Center at Fort Smith. Mr. Ball, a retired Navy lieutenant, died Thursday after a short illness.

Active pallbearers will be Lester Broaddrick, M. Eugene Martin, Al Wagner, James Minor, Leon Dunn, Grady Putman, John Smith and Gene Cole.

Honoary pallbearers will be Dayton Autry, Bob Jones, Earl Robinson, Billy Marion, Dale Brown, C.J. Franklin, Judge Milton Willis, Gene Scot, Selma Selby, Haskell Weatherton.

1965 DEATH NOTICE IN FORT SMITH SOUTHWEST TIMES RECORD:

Graveside military services for Bryan W. (Bill) Ball, (Lt., U.S. Navy, Ret.) 65 year old Van Buren resident, were conducted at National Cemetery in Fort Smith (AR) with the Rev. Charles Graves, pastor of the First Baptist Church, officiating and members of the U.S. Naval Training Center in Fort Smith participating. Ocker Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Ball, a retired Navy lietuenant, suffered an unexpected fatal heart attack last Thursday morning while playing golf.

He and his family moved to Van Buren four years ago after he had served for 13 years as an engineering instructor at Houston University and supervisor of the school's engineering lab.

Prior to that, Mr. Ball had retired from the U.S. Navy in 1947 with the rank of lieutenant. He was born in upper New York state (Note: This is an error. He was born in Gilreath, NC) and lived in North Carolina prior to his enlisting in the Navy.

Since coming to Van Buren, he had been active in civic affairs, particularly in working with young people. He was a member of the Van Buren Boys' Club board of directors and was spearheading a drive as head of the Boy's Club building committee to construct a Boys' Club building, which has been started in the City Park. He also managed a girls softall team this past summer as part of the Van Buren Lions Club activities.

Mr. Ball was a member of the Houston Elks Club, the Van Buren Lions Club, the Crawford County Conservation League, and the Church of Latter Day Saints.

Survivors include his widow, Jeanne; two sons, Gary and Bradley of the home; his mother, Mrs. Joe Marlow of Maravian, NC, and a brother, J.A. Ball, of Kannaolis, NC.
