William was born in Indiana, the son of Jesse N. West and Margaret Provolt. He first married Nancy A. Soper, in La Porte County, on February 29, 1852. They had the following known children: Leonard and Sarah Lillie. After the death of Nancy in 1861, William married Rebecca Graves on July 3, 1865. Rebecca appears to be deceased before 1880 where William is found in the census records living with his son Leonard and family. Children of this union have not been found.
