Eddy was the fifth of eight children born to H. H. "Harry" Pierce and E. Irena Hanes. He was born in the family home at 22121 Richton Road in Richton Park, Illinois. Eddy had rheumatic fever in his teen years and suffered from rheumatic heart for the last ten years of his life. He married Billie Jean Fairbanks on June 16, 1950 at St. Paul's Evangelical & Reformed Lutheran Church in Richton Park, Illinois. They had six children; four sons and two daughters. Eddy died of congestive heart failure at Saint James Hospital in Chicago Heights, Illinois. He was 28 years, 1 month and 11 days old at time of his death.
