CARROLLTON, Ga. - Mr. Richard L. Abney, 76, of Cottage Court in Carrollton died Wednesday, Sept. 19, 2007 in Carrollton.
Graveside services are planned for Saturday, Sept. 22 at 3:30 p.m. at Langdale Cemetery with the Revs. Greg Gregory and Rex Williams officiating.
Mr. Abney is survived by his wife, Diane Wallace Abney; three children, Richard L. (Lynn) Abney Jr. of Athens, Ala., Elizabeth Abney (Rex) Williams and Linda Abney (Bill) Whorton, both of Carrollton; eight grandchildren, Zachary Abney, Sarah Kathryn Abney, Samuel Abney, Ryan and Sarah Williams, Alex Williams, Abigail Whorton and Emily Whorton; three great-grandchildren, Bethany, Emma and Charlotte; his father-in-law, Horace Gregory of Valley; a brother, Greg Gregory of Valley; a sister-in-law, Paulette Gregory Leavins of Jacksonville, Fla.; and a cousin, Forrest Abney of Valley.
Born Sept. 11, 1931 in Lanett, Mr. Abney was the son of the late Lulla Lashley Jennings and Owen Jennings. He retired from the U.S. Air Force as a senior master sergeant after 22 years of service. Mr. Abney was a Vietnam veteran and received the Bronze Star for Valor. Following his retirement from military service, he was employed as an assistant engineer at George H. Lanier Memorial Hospital for more than 15 years. Mr. Abney was a member of Todd Congregational Christian Church, where he served as a deacon.
The family will receive friends Saturday, Sept. 22 from 1 until 3 p.m. at Johnson Brown-Service Funeral Home in Valley.
