On Nov. 30, 1858, Jeurgen "John" Hamburg arrived in New Orleans on the ship Washington. Born in Preetz, Germany in June of 1833, the twenty five-year-old John, who was a painter by trade, had sailed from Hamburg to New Orleans. He then traveled on to Mobile, Alabama and eventually to Meridian, Mississippi to join his sister, Louisa Hamburg Ratsburg. Not long after arriving in Meridian, he met Louisa Radford and they were married in Lauderdale County on July 1, 1860.

Although a citizen of his new country for only a short time, John served in the Confederate States Army during the American Civil War. He marched to war with and served alongside his brother-in-law Jacob Ratsburg. They served together for the duration of the war with Company H of the 8th Regiment Mississippi Infantry, also known as "The Southern Sentinels."
