Lee W. Harwell was born Jan. 23, 1946, in Clearwater, Fla., son of Joseph L. and Eleanor Bellinger Harwell. He attended area schools and graduated as salutatorian of the class of 1964 at Ogdensburg Free Academy. He graduated from the University of Rochester in 1968.

Mr. Harwell worked in the cancer research laboratory at the University of Rochester for many years. Later, he drove tractor-trailers coast to coast for a year.
