James A. Spargo, Jr. was my grandfather. When he was in high school, he was the bantam-weight wrestling champion of Oneida County. He graduated from Rome Free Academy in 1916 and from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1921.
He was married to my grandmother, Margaret Davies in 1924. They had three sons, James III, Richard, and Robert.
My grandfather was very gentlemanly. I was told that when he was a young man, his father referred to him as, "Gentleman Jim". I remember thsat he always doffed his hat to ladies he passed them on the street and if he was not wearing a hat, he still make the motion as if he was. He would say, "How'd a do".
I don't remember ever seeing Granddad without a shirt and tie. Even in his later years, whenever I visited his home, he was always dressed like the gentleman he was.
He worked his entire career at Spargo Wire Company. I understand from the men who used to work for him that they liked him. He was a tough but fair man. Grandad once told me, "You are not the boss unless you are the boss".
My grandmother died in December of 1967 and Grandad remarried in 1969.
He died November 24, 1976 in the Rome Hospital after a brief illness. Before he died he was able to hold his great-grandson, James V, born in July of 1975.
