Mrs. Harriet Delano Andrews
Mrs. Harriet Delano Andrews, 87, widow of the late Hannibal Andrews and for 57 years a resident of Massena, died Saturday morning at 11:30 o'clock at the home of her daughter, Mrs. W. J. Branson 2025 Elmwood avenue, Springfield, O. Although she had suffered from heart trouble for several years, her final illness was only of three days duration.
Mrs. Andrews was born at Eagle Harbor, Orleans county, in western New York, on October 11, 1839, daughter of Durfee and Ruth Starkweather Delano. Her early life
was spent there, and she received her education in the schools of Eagle Harbor and vicinity. It was there that her marriage to Mr. Andrews, a native of Massena, took place in May, 1862. Mr. Andrews was a son of John B. Andrews, who built the old stone house on Andrews street now owned and occupied by Village President W. Gilbert Hawes. He and his bride lived in Massena for a few years, and then, owing to his health, they resided in the south for about five years.
Returning to Massena they built the house on Andrews street just east of the old stone house and occupied in later years by the late Miss Helen M. Andrews. Mr. Andrews became associated with his brother, Guy B. Andrews, in the mercantile business. After living in the Andrews street home for about eleven years he and his family moved to the home on Main street now used as a parish house by St. John's Episcopal church.
Mr. Andrews died on September 15, 1897, and Mrs. Andrews did not make her home in Massena permanently after that, although spending her summers here. Winters were spent with her children. On May 17, 1919, her daughter, Miss Katherine Andrews, died in Pittsburg, Pa. The following year Mrs. Andrews sold her home on Main street and since then had lived with her daughter, Mrs, Branson,
in Springfield.
She was a member of Emmanuel Congregational church for 64 years and at the time of her death was the oldest living member in point of number of years of membership. Although she retained her church membership here, she was actively identified with Covenant Presbyterian church in Springfield.
Mrs. Andrews was the mother of Gen. Avery D. Andrews, of New York city, a classmate of Gen. John J. Pershing in the United States Military Academy at West
Point and who was General Pershing's assistant chief of staff during the World war. Besides his record in the United States army, General Andrews was police commissioner of the city of New York from 1894 to 1896, serving with the late Theodore Roosevelt. At that time New York had four police commissioners instead of one as is the case today. When Colonel Roosevelt was governor of New York state, General Andrews served under him as adjutant general. He is now American representative of the Royal Dutch oil interests.
Besides General Andrews and her daughter, Mrs. Branson, Mrs. Andrews is survived by one brother, Oliver Delano, of Red Bank, N. J.; three grandchildren, Schofield Andrews, of Philadelphia, Pa., Delano Andrews, of New York city, and
Delano Branson, of Springfield, O.; and three great-grandchildren, Schofield Andrews, Jr., Stuart Brown Andrews and Stockton Avery Andrews, of Philadelphia, Pa. Schofield Andrews was named after his maternal grandfather, Major Gen. John M. Schofield, of Civil war fame, and the name was passed to Schofield Andrews, Jr.
The funeral was held Sunday afternoon at 3:30 o'clock from the Branson home in Springfield, Dr. Charles Ryan Adams, of Covenant Presbyterian church, officiating. The body arrived here Tuesday on the 10:15 a. m. train accompanied by Gen. and Mrs. Avery D. Andrews, Mr. and Mrs. W. J. Branson and son, Delano Andrews. It was taken to Emmanuel Congregational church, where services were held
immediately, Rev. W. W. Schumaker, pastor, officiating. Many friends from out of town as well as Massena attended. Burial was at Pine Grove Cemetery.
