Solomon left Reading County, PA, and lived for a while in Madison Twp., Franklin County, OH, where he met his first wife Susanah King. Along with her family and others, they left Franklin County in a Conestoga wagon and settled on the north bank of St. Marys River, Willshire Twp., Van Wert County, OH. Their first home was a hut adjoining the trunk of a large tree that had fallen. His homestead became a trading post for river men, Indians, fur traders and others.

He became a large land owner and accumulated considerable wealth. After Susanah died, he rented his farm adjoining Wilshire and commenced hotel and mercantile businesses. "One of the leading merchants of Wilshire, annual sales are from $35,000 to 40,000, and besides this, he deals largely in all kinds of grain. ("History of Van Wert County, Ohio," by Sutton.)

Solomon was the son of J. Georg and Salome Hartzog. He married Susanah King (1830) and Mary Blossom (1846). Children of Solomon and Susanah were: Mary A. Hartzog Smith, Jesse, Leah Hartzog Zimmerman Banta, Benjamin F., King Solomon, Rachel, Joshua, Eliza J. Casto, and Charles.
