Son of Heinrich Michael Berger and Elisabetha Fredricka Matz who worshiped in the parish of Wilgartswiesen-Hofstätten, Sudwestpfalz, Rheinland-Pfalz, Germany before arriving in the United States around 1832. First arriving in Stark Co., Ohio they came to Marshall Co., Indiana around 1838. John was born there and lived there until becoming a minister of the German Evangelical Association. While a minister, he served in Michigan, Ohio, Illinois, Indiana and California as well as several years in Essen, Germany.
He was a veteran of the American Civil War, serving in the Union Army (29th Indiana Infantry Regiment, Co. K) and saw action at Shiloh before being discharged due to illness.
His health never recovered and he came to Los Angeles, California in 1888 and finally, Oakland, Alameda, California in 1890. He died there in 1891. His wife outlived him by over forty years. He was also survived by nine of his known ten children. His siblings were: Heinrich (Henry) Berger; Elisabetha Berger, Johann Michael Berger and an unnamed brother who all died in infancy; Johann Philipp (Philip) Berger; Katharina (Catherine) Berger Beyler; Anna Elisabetha (Anna Elizabeth) Berger Beyler; Johann Jakob (Jacob) Berger; and Anna Marie (Mary Ann) Berger Ringgenberg. His children were: Samuel J. Berger (died young); Otto Allmen Berger; John William Berger; Albert Jacob Berger; Mary Barbara Berger Jory; Garfield Mentor Berger; Madeline Susanna Berger Grimshaw; Gideon Gottlieb Berger; Jesse Arthur Berger; and Florence P. Berger.
