Obituary
Mary Jane Bates was born in Madison county, Ind., January 22, 1851. She was married to Francis Eakes Aug. 6th, 18(unreadable) in the state of Indiana.
They moved to Kansas in 1869 and located near Cherokee where they lived on the farm until the year 1905, when they retired from the farm and came to Cherokee to spend the evening of their life in peace and comfort.
Sister Eakes was converted and united with the Methodist church when she was 22 years of age and remained a faithful member since. She loved her church and enjoyed talking of her rich religious experiences more than any other topic.
Much of her life was spent in helping others who needed help. While no children came to them, they opened their home and hearts to several little children needing a home. Lloyd was taken when only a boy and legally adopted.
It was about (unreadable) o'clock, on Thursday, Sept. 14, 1922, that which was mortal of Mrs. Eakes ceased to be and her spirit took its flight to be with the father of all the righteous, having lived on earth 71 years, 7 months and 22 days.
She leaves to mourn her departure her companion and foster children besides other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were conducted by Rev. E.L. Torrence, pastor of the M.E. church, on Saturday afternoon at 3 o'clock . The body was laid to rest in the Cherokee cemetery.
