George Preston Lesh, 96 years old of Dauphin, Pa. passed away peacefully on Sunday, November 2, 2008 in the Holy Spirit Hospital with his loving family by his side. George went home to be with his Lord and Savior and to hear the angels sing.
George was born February 22, 1912 in Walnut Grove, Perry County to J. Preston and Lottie (Bealor) Lesh. He was the widower of Arbutus R. Lesh and is survived by his children, George W. Lesh of Dauphin and Anne M. Lesh of East Stroudsburg; five grandchildren, George T., Scott W., Brian D. Lesh, Jennifer O'Hay and Diane Shukaitis; five great grandchildren, Dana, Scott II, Steven, Nicholas and James Lesh; Sister Hulda Lesh Zinn of Belleville and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a Brother, Elmer Lesh and sisters, Esther Latchford and Grace. George was a farmer in his youth and worked on the WPA Projects during the Depression. He later worked at Bethlehem Fairfield Shipyard in Baltimore, MD as a foreman and supervisor. He was standing on the bow of the Patrick Henry Liberty Ship when it was launched on Sept 27, 1941. The first Liberty Ship launched on the east coast in WWII.
George proudly and honorably served his country in WWII with the 13th Engineer Battalion U.S. Army. He was a member of King David's Masonic Lodge #68 in Baltimore, MD since 1943 and a past member of the VFW. He was a brick mason and residential home builder for 38 years.
George was a loving Father and friend and will be forever remembered and missed by his children and family. He was one of a kind.
Services Thursday from the David Myers Funeral Home, Newport. Viewing 11-12 p.m. with Masonic Services by the Newport Lodge #381 F&AM at 12 p.m. Funeral to following the Masonic service with the Pastor James God Officiting. Burial is in the Newport Cemetery with full military honors by the New Bloomfield VFW #7463.
