Peter Bahr, Pioneer, Died At Age Of 89

Funeral services were held at the Methodist church in Springview, Saturday, October 11th, for Peter Bahr one of Keya Paha county oldest residents. Rev. Dorn, pastor for the Ainsworth Lutheran church officiated. Mr Bahr, who has been in poor health for several years, passed away Thursday October 9th.
Peter Christopher Bahr, son of Peter and Frederika Bahr, passed away Thursday noon, October 9th, 1941, at the age of 89 years and 15 days, on the place known as the old Hamilton Snider place which he has owned since 1896.
Mr Bahr was born in Rugeuiralde, Pomerania, Germany, September 24, 1852 and was baptized in the Lutheran Church when only a few days old. He remained at home attending common schools until he was 14 years old.
At that time he began life as a sailor and followed that work for seven years. During the time, he visited North and South America, China, Japan, Australia, and all parts of the globe. This was an liberal education in itself. He gave up the work at the age 21 years and started for the United States. He left Brazil with the intention of visiting an old school mate in Richardson county, Nebraska.
There he decided to settle and in the spring of 1875 rented a farm on which he remained until 1883 when he came to Keya Paha county locating on a farm at the mouth of Wyman creek. His first building was log house which he erected himself in about 1894. He then moved to section 33, township 33, range 19, remaining there for two years.
At the end of that time he purchased the place on which he spent the rest of his life, with the exception of 15 years spent in Springview and about 18 months with a daughter, Mrs Emma Dubel of near Burton and the last seven months with a son, on the old place.
When he started here his sole possessions were a team of horses and a wagon. From the he accumulated his fine property through his energetic labor and good management, supplement by thrift and industry.
In 1878 he married in Richardson County to Miss Ernestine Kussmann, also a native of Germany. Fourteen children, all of whom excepting the first three, were born in Keya Paha county.
Mr Bahr was one of the oldest settles in the county and was one of those who helped organize Keya Paha county in 1885 and voted at the first election ever held here. He took an active part in politics, attending county and state conventions and lending his influence for good government. He leaves to mourn his passing six daughters, Mrs Edith Muth, Rifle, Colorado; Mrs Lilles Estes, Grand Junction, Colorado; Mrs Emma Dubel, Burton, Mrs Nellie Simons, Norden, Mrs Doris Gipson, Humphrey; and Miss Alta Bahr of York. Four sons, Albert, Rifle, Colorado; Peter, Gregory, South Dakota; William, Carns; Ora of Duff. Thirty-one grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren, besides other relatives and friends. His wife, two daughters and two sons preceded him in death.

In 1875, he became a citizen of the United States.
