Bunting, Lt. Col. Billy
DENISON - Retired Lt. Colonel Billy H. Bunting, 85-year-old Denison resident, died Tuesday, Oct. 21, 2008 at his residence. At his request, he was cremated and no services are planned.
Lt. Col. Bunting was born on May 27, 1923 in Liberal, Kan., son of Hugh and Sarah Irene Marlow Bunting. On March 14, 1970, he married Sara Kilgore in Stanford, Conn.
He graduated from Liberal High School with a football scholarship to Texhoma College. He volunteered for the Air Cadets and received his wings from Douglas, Ariz. He joined the Army Air Corps and flew 40 combat missions in the Burma/ China area.
He left the service and was recalled to the U.S. Air Force to serve in Korea where he flew 100 missions and was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross. He was stationed at Clark AFB, Philippines where he flew numerous courier missions to and from Vietnam. He retired as a Lieutenant Colonel after serving 27 years as an aviator in the Air Force.
He worked for the FAA in New York City as the assistant principal for American Airlines at JFK. He was a member of the Elk's Lodge 238 for 42 years; American Legion Post 231 for 40 years; lifetime member of the VFW Post 2773; AMA Texoma R.C. for 17 years; and Texas R.C. Association for 17 years.
Surviving are his wife, Sara J. Bunting of Denison; sons, Billy Lynn Bunting of Atlanta, Ga., Theodore Elliott Bunting of Denison, Robert Hugh Bunting of Shalimar, Fla.; 13 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren and one great-greatgrandchild; sister-in-law, Marguerite Bunting; niece, Michelle Benedict of Albuquerque, N.M.; and nephew, Harry Bunting of San Jose, Calif..
He was preceded in death by his parents; and brother, Harry Bunting.
The family suggests memorials to the SPCA of Texas, 8520 FM 720, McKinney, TX 75070.
Johnson-Moore Funeral Home in Denison has charge of arrangements.
