Son of Caroline E. Herrington and James Samuel Adams.

Elijah Cooper Adams was born in Rice Path, Carteret County, North Carolina, May 6, 1856; died in Morehead City, NC, March 5, 1938; buried at Gales Creek Cemetery, Carteret County, North Carolina.

He married in Carteret County, February 10, 1876, Mary Ann Willis, daughter of Susan Mary Moore (1831-1900 or 1906) and Macajah Willis (1827-1892) of Salter Path, NC.

Cooper was a fisherman and had such a large garden that he was also considered a farmer. Cooper and Mary Ann lived at Bill's Point, between Rice Path and Yellow Hill on Bogue Banks, Carteret County, NC. About 1897/98, they moved to Salter Path, NC, were they were living in 1910.

They had four children:
(1) Macajah Adams b. 1877, d. 1952
(2) Priscilla S. Adams b. 1879, d. 1896
(3) Eliza Adams b. 1882, d. 1972
(4) James M. Adams
