Desmond served as a Navigator in the 320th Bomber Squadron, 90th Bomber Group (Heavy) on B-24J "Live Wire" #44-41235, and was KIA when his plane ran out of fuel over the China Sea and crashed. As he bailed out he got tangled in his parachute and drowned.
