Russell was an excellent horseman, boasting that he could out ride most young men in the area when he was 82 yr old. Even at this age he was quite healthy and active and died only after a strangulated hernia was improperly treated.

In the front of the book is featured the picture of Russell, Serena and their 5 children that was taken in the fall of 1892 or Spring of 1893.
