Presidential Cabinet Secretary. The son of Congressman William Whiting (1841-1911), he graduated from Amherst College in 1886 and became active in several commercial ventures, including joining his father's business, Holyoke's Whiting Paper Company, a firm known nationwide for its famous advertising slogan "when you think of writing, think of Whiting". Whiting became the company's Treasurer, and was named its President after his father's death. A close friend of President Calvin Coolidge, he was one of Coolidge's first political supporters and as a Delegate to the 1920 Republican National Convention he played a key role in obtaining for Coolidge the Republican nomination for Vice President. Whiting also served as a Delegate to the Republican National Conventions of 1924 and 1928. In August, 1928 Coolidge named him to succeed Herbert Hoover as Secretary of Commerce after Hoover was named the Republican nominee for President. Whiting served until the end of Coolidge's term in March, 1929, afterwards returning to his Holyoke business interests and also serving as a Delegate to the 1936 Republican National Convention.
