Leonard Mitchell was the 3rd child of five siblings. He had two older brothers, Albert and Ray and two younger sisters, Gladys and Nellie. When Leonard's dad died in 1924, the children were placed in an orphanage because their mother couldn't afford them.

On Leonard's 13th birthday, he climbed on a tree limb that was overhanging a shallow river and the other boys, as a joke, made the limb shake until Leonard fell off into the water and hit his head. The other boys ran away laughing not knowing Leonard hit his head and he drown. This unfortunate incident happened at the orphanage.

Leonard was the son of Andrew Jackson Mitchell and Janie Fairfax (Mitchell) Young.
