Oroville Mercury Register (Oroville, California) 11 Feb 1929, Monday Page 4: J.N. Hubbard [sic], Old Timer of Cherokee, Dies. Death of John Newton Hufford, 89, pioneer resident of the Cherokee district, who was found lying in the doorway of his home yesterday, was due to natural causes, Deputy Coroner W.M. Thomas said today. Hufford had been dead only a short time when the body was discovered by John Graham, who was passing.

Hufford, a native of Iowa, cross the plains with his parents in the fifties. He was employed in hydraulic operations in the Cherokee mine.

Was Mason. Hufford was a member of Table Mountain Lodge No. 124, Free and Accepted Masons, at Cherokee. Members of the lodge will conducte the funeral, which will be held under the direction of the Thomas funeral home.

Hufford is survived by the following nephews and nieces: Mrs. Henry Moore, Mrs. Walter Moore, Mrs. Hibbard McDaniel, Mrs. David Vintin, Eugene Cushman, Nee Lotta Cushman, all of Oregon; a sister, Mrs. O.B. Cushman of Oregon, and John R. Moseley, Thermalito.
