Don's parents were Joseph George Chandler and Florence Elizabeth Bates.

From obituary: Don contracted polio as a teenager and walked as an adult with the help of crutches. At age 15 he came to Tacoma and enrolled in Lincoln High School. He succumbed to polio in 1945 while visiting in Minnesota and after a long rehabilitation returned to Tacoma, where he graduated from high school at age 21. He went on to business college, then began a long career at the Coca Cola Co., retiring in 1985.

He married Betty June Smith on July 6, 1956. They lived in Seattle, then Kirkland. Mr. Chandler faced many physical challenges but was involved with many charitable organizations, including his membership at Rose Hill Presbyterian Church, correspondence on political and Christian issues, and visits, cards and phone calls to those in need. He is remembered for his undaunted optimism, resourcefulness and deep faith. His wife died in 2003. Survivors include his son, Joel Chandler; daughter Joan Langkow; siblings Clifford, Joan, Gwen and Darlene; and three grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Rose Hill Presbyterian Church, 12202 N.E. 980th St., Kirkland.
