William J Henley ex judge of the Appellate court of Indiana was born at
Carthage Rush county Indiana October 15 1863 and is the son of Thomas W and
Hannah C Henley He received a good common school education supplemented by
that received from the Friends Academy at Carthage He studied law two years
with Mellett & Bundy a New castle and one year with George Clark at
Rushville Indiana He was admitted to the bar in 1883 and began practice with
BL Smith In 1889 he formed a partnership with LD Guffin In 1894 he was an
unsuccessful candidate for the nomination for Circuit Judge In 1896 he was
elected to the Appellate court and re elected in 1902 He resigned as
Appellate Judge in 1903 to accept the position of president and general
counsel for the Chicago tt Western Indiana Railroad and removed to Chicago
where he remained for six years In 1910 he resumed the practice of law in
Indianapolis
