Former Orange Leader Collier Cobb Jr. Dies

CHAPEL HILL – Collier Cobb Jr., 88, a Chapel Hill business leader and long-time chairman of the Orange County Board of Commissioners, died Monday after a long illness.

Cobb was the founder of Collier Cobb & Associates, Chapel Hill’s oldest insurance company. The firm late became one of the largest bonding agencies in the nation.

HE RETIRED as chairman of the company in 1971.

He was a trustee of UNC-Chapel Hill from 1945-53, serving as chairman of the building committee at the time N.C. Memorial Hospital was begun.

His father, Collier Cobb, was a professor of geology at UNC-Chapel Hill for many years.

Cobb was president of the Carolinas branch of the Associated General Contractors for two terms in 1942 and 1944. He was an Orange County commissioner for 14 years, from 1938-1952, and chairman of the county commissioners for 10 years.

HE WAS A director of the Research Triangle Foundation and was for many years president and chairman of the board of directors of the Bank of Chapel Hill, until it merged with North Carolina National Bank, at which time he became a director at NCNB.

Gov. Luther Hodges, who appointed Cobb to the State Ports Authority in 1957 said, “Collier Cobb was one of the outstanding insurance men in this state and the South. He was active in all the community activities in and around Chapel Hill, he was a trusted friend, a political adviser and a great citizen.”

Cobb received an A.B. degree from UNC-Chapel Hill in 1914 and a B.S. degree in engineering in 1915.

The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Chapel of the Cross in Chapel Hill. Burial will be in the Old Chapel Hill cemetery.

He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Emma Estes Cobb; a son, Collier Cobb III of Chapel Hill; a daughter, Mrs. Nancy Cobb Lilly of Raleigh; and seven grandchildren.
