A telegram received in this city yesterday announced the death in Pittsburg, Pa., of Edwin L. Stadden, formerly of this city, a son of Mrs. Mary J. Stadden, of 1008 South Fourth street and a brother of George B. Stadden, vice-president and general superintendent of agencies of the Franklin Life Insurance company of this city, residing at 411 South Second street. Mr. Stadden was in charge of the shipping yards of the Carnegie Steel company at Pittsburg and the meagre information received here yesterday stated that he was accidentally killed in the yards of the company.
The deceased is survived by his mother and brother of this city and a brother, Richard Stadden, residing at Manzanillo, New Mexico. George B. Stadden has gone to Pittsburg to take care of the remains of his brother. It is likely that the remains will be brought to this city and interred in the family lot at Oak Ridge cemetery, beside those of the deceased's father, William Stadden. Stadden, formerly of this city, and a son of Mrs. Mary Stadden, 1008 South Fourth street, who was killed last Saturday in the yards of the Carnegie Steel Works, were made known here yesterday. Mr. Stadden was yard manager of the Carnegie Steel Works and had charge of all the incoming and outgoing cars. Last Saturday Mr. Stadden put a new force of men to work and they were switching cars and had started two card down the track, with no one on them. Mr. Stadden, who was standing near by, noticed that no one was aboard the cars, and saw that they would run into several other cars, on which there were many men working, if they were not stopped. He climbed on one of the cars and set the brakes. Mr. Stadden was unaware of a steam pipe which crossed the tracks and which struck him on the side of the head, knocking him to the tracks below. Whether he died from the result of being hit by the steam pipe or by falling to the tracks below is not known. Mr. Stadden had been in the employ of the company for over nine years and was well liked by everyone.
