Joe was born in Wilsontown, Scotland and was the firstborn child of Lithuanian immigrants William and Magdeline Grinkevich. He migrated with his parents to Shamokin, PA as a toddler and then on to Steger, IL where his father William worked in a piano factory. He was living on his parents farm in the Town of Little Black in Taylor County, WI when he met Mary Pupp. They were married in St. Bernard Catholic Church in Abbotsford, WI on October 9, 1928 the year following his younger sister Agnes' marriage to Albert Pupp, Mary's older brother. Joe and Mary never had children of their own but were favorites of their many nieces and nephews.

Joe and Mary lived most of their lives in the Chicago area where Joe worked as a machinist in a radio parts factory. Joseph legally had his surname abbreviated to Grinker from Grinkevich.
