Aksel was the 9th of 12 children of Anders Andersen [1852-1924] and Ane Marie Olsen [1860-1929]. He arrived on 9 July 1913 at the Port of New York aboard the SS Hellig Olav, which sailed from Copenhagen, Denmark. He enlisted as a Private on 1 June 1917 at Columbus, Ohio (Serial Number 1027677). He was promoted to Private 1st Class 1 Sept 1918.

5 of his brothers also came from Denmark to North America: Nels Peder Andersen 1887-1922; Carl Andersen 1888-1949, Emil Valdemar Andersen 1889-1949, Johannes Oluf Andersen 1895-1958, and Thorvald Viggo Andersen 1905-1930 - Carl & Johannes also served with the US Military in WWI.
