Helen attended Elk #3 country school on Bear Creek for eight years. She graduated from Elkport High School in 1948. She attended summer classes at Upper Iowa University in Fayette, and taught the Elk Valley Country School when she was 17 years old. Following that year, she returned to college and graduated with a two year elementary degree in 1950. She taught 4th and 5th grades in Strawberry Point for four years. In 1956, she began teaching 5th grade in Edgewood where she taught for four years. In 1969, she received her Bachelor of Science Degree from Upper Iowa and began teaching in the Starmont Schools, where she served 1st through 4th grades for twenty six years. She enjoyed teaching and delighted in her student's achievements.
Helen and Charles Edward Thomas were married Thursday, August 17, 1950, in the Edgewood Methodist Church. Four children were born to this union. They resided in Strawberry Point over the years.
She was baptized in the Methodist faith, where she served on various committees, taught Sunday school classes, served as choir director and sang in the choir for many years. She served as a Dubuque District Officer for nine years, was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, Retired Teachers Association, President of Clayton County Genealogy Society, Clayton County Artists, Queen of Red Hat Charmers and was a member of the local museum board.
Helen had a living faith and communion with Jesus Christ. She enjoyed her family and grandchildren and cared very deeply for each one. She enjoyed the company of friends and relatives. Hobbies dear to her were reading, genealogy, music - especially the piano, harmonica and singing, traveling, art, sewing, quilting and spending time with family and friends.
Survivors include her husband of fifty-eight years, Charles, of Strawberry Point; her children, Patricia Ann (Brian) Loso of East Dubuque, IL, Kimberly Kay Schroeder of Chillicothe, IL, Tamara Sue (Marvin) Kraus of Strawberry Point and Steven Charles (Carol) Thomas of Strawberry Point; her grandchildren, Nicolette and Melanie Loso, Zachary, Lindsey, Hannah, McKenzie and Wyatt Schroeder, Ashley, Andrew, Autumn Kraus and McKenna, Landon and Morgan Thomas; two sisters, Una (LeRoy) Swanson of Manchester, Beverly (Walter) Clauson of Strawberry Point and one brother Leon (Jean) Krieg of Lakeland, FL.
She was preceded in death by her granddaughter, Annalissa Grace Schroeder; son-in-law, Ronald Ahrens and her parents.
