George Henry Bender, the second oldest of the nine children born to Peter J. Bender Jr. and Kathrine Hatzenbuehler, was born on February 11, 1879, near Henry, Illinois. His family came to Nebraska in 1885 and settled near Cornlea, Nebraska. He received his education in the local school, and then attended Normal School at Fremont, Nebraska, from which he graduated in 1901. In 1902, he filed an affidavit for incorporation of Cornlea. In 1903 he came back to Cornlea and opened up a General Store.

He was united in Marriage to Cecelia Ratterman on February 5, 1902, in St. Francis Church, Humphrey, Nebraska. She was born on April 6, 1880, the daughter of John Ratterman and Mary Kuehta. Her father came from Germany and her mother from Bohemia.

To this union were born nine children:

Mr. and Mrs. Bender lived in Cornlea, after their marriage, where he ran a General Store. In 1907 his father joined him in his business, and the store was known as Bender and Son.
