Mrs. Bernice Ames died at a Waterville hospital Sunday, January 21, 1940, after a long illness. She was born in Thorndike November 14, 1891, the daughter of the late Knot and Mary Cates. On March 26, 1912, she married Jacob L. Ames, Jr., and since that time had lived in Unity.

She was devoted to her family and will be greatly missed by a wide circle of friends. Mrs. Ames was past noble grand of Favori Rebekah lodge and for several years served on the Republican town committee.

She is survived by her husband; a son, Clayton C. Ames and a grandson, Clayton Ames, Jr., all of Unity; one sister Mrs. G. C. Carter of Winterport; brother, R. B. Cates of Thorndike; one niece and six nephews.

Funeral services were held at the home Wednesday morning with Rev. Champlin of Albion officiating. There was a large attendance of relatives, friends and neighbors and many beautiful flowers. The bearers were E. S. Farwell, F. G. Ward, S. S. Pendleton and R. H. Johnson. Interment was in the Pond Cemetery in Unity.
