RIVER CLAIMS MOTHER AND SON
Mrs. Chas. J. Chabot and Boy of 12 Drown in Guadalupe.
Mrs. Charles J. Chabot, wife of a former San Antonio merchant, and her 12 year old son, Charles Jr., were drowned while bathing in the Guadalupe river at the home of her mother, Mrs. Elizabeth Hugo, near Comfort, yesterday afternoon.
The news of the deplorable and startling tragedy was followed by a thrilling night ride in a large touring car to Comfort by her brothers, Victor and Ralph Hugo, and the wife of Victor.
They left San Antonio at 8 o'clock in the evening after receiving word of the drowning, and quckly made the fifty-five miles of the journey.
Charles J. Chabot, husband of the unfortunate woman, is now engaged in business in Dallas, where he was notified of the tragedy last night. He will arrive during the day.
Mrs. Chabot, her son and a 10 year old daughter arrived from Dallas some time ago for a visit with relatives in this city and neighborhood. After passing some days in San Antonio she left with her children yesterday morning for the Good Times Inn, about one and a half miles from Comfort, to be the guest of her mother. She reached Comfort about noon, and later, with her children, sought the cooling waters of the Guadalupe to refresh herself after the hot, dusty trip from the city. Mrs. Chabot got into deep water, and in response to her cries the son plunged into the hole in an effort to rescue her. Helpless on the bank, the little girl saw her mother and brother go down to death, unable to give aid.
Realizing the tragic situation, she hastened to Mrs. Hugo's home and told what had happened. When friends and relatives reached the scene they were too late to save the lives of the victims, but at once made search for their bodies. After some hours the bodies were found and brought to the surface amid heartrending scenes, Mrs. Chabot's mother being prostrated by the shock.
Mrs. Chabot, who was 30 years old, was married in early young womanhood to Charles J. Chabot, then engaged in business here. She belonged to one of the oldest and best known families in this section and has many relatives and a host of friends here and in surrounding towns. The immediate reltives surviving her are her mother and Mrs. Charles Schell, Mrs. W. D. McCarty, Misses Frida and Sallie, sisters, and Victor and Ralph, brothers.
The bodies of Mrs. Chabot and her son were taken in charge by an undertaker from the establishment of J. T. Burnet & Co., of this city, prepared for shipment and will arrive here over the San Antonio & Aransas Pass railroad this evening at 7 o'clock. The funeral will be held tomorrow afternoon, but the hour has not been definitely fixed. The burial will be in the Hugo family lot.
