First assigned to Headquarters 1st Battalion, 198th Regiment, 206th Infantry of the Alaskan Defense Command and attached to the AAA Costal Artillery Searchlight Unit during The Battle of Attu and Dutch Harbor engagement.

After serving in the Alaskan Defense Command he was assigned to the 53rd Replacement Battalion, he sailed to England is June 1944. Went to France in September 1944. Transferred as a rifleman to A Company, 48th Armored Infantry Battalion, 7th Armored Division. During Operation Garden Market.


Melvin was returned to the United States for burial on November 13, 1947 to his home town of Oshkosh, Wisconsin at Peace Lutheran Cemetery.
