US Congressman. At the outbreak of the Civil War, he was a lawyer in practice when he enlisted in Union Army and served as a Captain in the 17th Regiment, Illinois Infantry. After the war, served as a member of the Illinois State Senate, 1866 to 1877. In 1877, he was elected as a Republican to the Forty-fifth and Forty-sixth Congresses, serving until 1881. Not a candidate for re-nomination, he resumed the practice of law until his death.
