John said on his Mexican War pension he was born Morgan Co Ill. He volunteered for US Army during Mexican War July 20 1846 Milam City and was sent to Austin where he was assigned to Col P H Bell's regiment of TX Mounted Volunteers, company commander as Capt Shapley P Ross, father of gov Sul Ross. Fall and winter 1846 the ranger company was near Double File Crossing Brush Creek Williamson Co then family moved to Berry's Creek and probably where John met Mary Polly Berry.
For next 2 years duty was in Austin, Rio Grande River, village of Waco Indians, McLennan County and Brazos River then onto assignment of Smith's Battalion and went to Camargo MX engaging in guerilla action for several months. When Polly Mary's dad John Berry died 1866 he had appointed John Compton as his executor along with his son Emanuel Berry. John and Polly had purchased 578ac from her dad before his death. Their children went to Berry's Creek school.
Then one morning, after being married 26yrs and 10 kids, spring of 1876, Polly had mounted her horse and rode to sister Catherine Jackson and declared John had left her, taking 4 childen with him. There is no reason given but Polly waited 2 yrs for him to return before she finally got a divource April 1878.

Margaret also had 3 kids from her Clanton marriage, James, Emma, May plus 2 kids of John's and Polly's, Joseph and Theodocia, older two he had taken, Hannah and Elizabeth were now married, then when John and Polly's daughter Daney died 1879, her husband dropped off their 2 Hynds kids for them to raise.
John passed at 82y after a long and colorful life and received his Mexican War pension which Margaret got after he died. She passed 1916 of pneumonia and they are buried side by side Battle Creek Cemetery with their imposing double stone monument in middle of Compton family plot, 5 ft tall, surrounded by TX cedars.
