Mrs. Mary Virginia (Cope) Cobean, wife of Charles H. Coben, died at 2:20 o'clock Saturday afternoon at her home, 430 Carlisle Street. A complication of diseases caused death. Mrs. Cobean had been in failing health fir the last two years. Her condition became critical two weeks ago.
Mrs. Cobean was born at East Bradford, Chester County, and was a daughter of the late Col. Emmor B. and Isabella (Spackman) Cope. She attended the public schools of Chester County and Darlington seminary at West Chester.
She moved to Gettysburg with other members of the Cope family in 1893 when Colonel Cope came here as chief of engineers to lay out the National Military Park. She resided in Gettysburg since that time. The Copes lived first on Chambersburg Street and then moved to Baltimore Street where they have lived for a number of years.
On May 5, 1920, she and Mr. Cobean were married and resided continuously since that time at 430 Carlisle Street. Mr. Cobean is the proprietor of the Cyclorama and for a number of years Mrs. Cobean assisted her husband in his duties as custodian of the battle painting. She was a member of the Gettysburg Presbyterian Church and of the missionary society of that church.
Surviving are her husband; three sisters: Miss Helen L. Cope of Baltimore Street, retired supervising principal of the Gettysburg public schools; Mrs. R.E. Wible of Mummasburg Road; and Mrs. Harry B. Martin of Baltimore Street, eight nephews and three nieces.
Funeral services Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Cobean residence with the Rev. Seth C. Morrow, pastor of the Presbyterian Church, officiating. Interment in Evergreen Cemetery.
