Amanda Jane Ayers
Sunset, like a holy benediction after strife,
Has fallen upon a long, strong, honest life:
The toil-worn hands are laid to rest
Across her faithful tired breast;
Her work is done, her cares laid by,
How sweet to rest 'neath friendly sky,
Nor dread the waking: Knowing well
That she who ordered all her life;
Protection gave when fears were rife
And sustenance for those she loved,
Would welcome her to realms above
With outstretched hand, and words of live:
Amanda Jane Logsdon was born March 23, 1856 in Parkside, Virginia and died Oct 12, 1949 at her home in Kirwin Kansas at the age of ninety three years, six months and nineteen days.
She was the eldest of 3 children born to Mary Elizabeth and Obadiah Logsdon. While still a girl her father was killed in the Civil War making it necessary for her mother to take over the family responsibilities.
On Nov 11, 1875, she was married to James Ayers at Freetown, Indiana and they joined the Methodist Episcopal church in 1880. In 1882 they moved to a homestead near Orleans, Neb where they lived until 1898, when they moved to Graham Co Kansas and in 1907 came to Kirwin, Ks
To this union were born 8 children: Ora F
. Inez O., Zella May, Earl G., Ethel E.. Mary E., Arva A. and Audra Fern
Her husband James who passed away March 9, 1935, Inez, Ora and Mary preceded her in death.
Grandma Ayers, as she was most commonly known has enjoyed a very active and fruitful life.
At the age of 83 she fell and suffered a broken hip which caused a long and serious illness. Through sheer grit and determination she managed to walk again. After this she enjoyed good health until her death.
In her passing she leaves of the immediate family to mourn her departure, her son, Earl G. Ayers of Boulder, Co;
Mrs Zella Spicer of Glade, Kansas; Mrs Arva Royce of Hollywood, California, Mrs Ethel E, Garret, Kirwin, Mrs Audra Fern Rassmussen of Kirwin, a daughter-in-law Mrs Rose Ayers, 2 son-in-laws Earl Rassmussen and Paul Royce; 24 grandchildren, 32 great grandchildren and 6 great-great grandchildren.
Grandma Ayers has passed away; she has been relieved from all worldly cares and suffering; she has fought the good fight of faith; she stood for honesty and unselfishness, peace and good will to mankind. Gone but she will never be forgotten.
