Monsignor Barthélémy Djabla came from a large family. He was born in Mahibouo, in the Canton of Paccolo of the Côte d'Ivoire, in 1936, and received his elementary studies in the Catholic Schools of the district, moving later to Daloa, where he underwent further studies at the Collège Catholique.

Working briefly as a teacher, in 1954, he abandoned his job in order to join the Diocesan Seminary of Bingerville. Between 1956 and 1959, he resided at the Seminary of Ouida, Benin. After serving within the Military for a year, he finished successfully his studies at the Seminary of Anyama, and was ordained to the priesthood on March 15, 1964, at the age of 28.

Successively, Djabla was named as vicar, formator and curate of the named Anyama Seminary. From 1971 till 1978, he served as rector of the Petit Séminaire Saint Dominique Savio, and parish priest of Divo between 1978 and 1990.

Aged 53, Father Barthélémy was appointed Bishop of the Diocese of San Pedro-en-Côte d'Ivoire by Pope John Paul II, receiving his episcopal consecration on January 7, 1990, from Cardinal Bernard Yago, assisted by Archbishop Noël Kokora-Tekry and Cardinal Bernard Agré.

On July 21, 2006, Bishop Djabla was named Archbishop of the Metropolitan See of Gagnoa by Pope John Paul II, taking possession of the Archdiocese on the following September 24.

The Archbishop died on Monday, September 15, 2008, after suffering from an unexpected cerebral hemorrhage, whilst recovered the Polyclinic Sainte Anne Marie de Cocody. His funeral Mass, which saw the participation of hundreds, was celebrated at the Metropolitan Cathedral of Saint Anne in Gagnoa, where interment also took place on Friday, September 26.
