Major League Baseball Player. He was born Edwin Albert Brinkman and played at the shortstop position for fifteen seasons (1961 to 1975) with the Washington Senators, Detroit Tigers, St. Louis Cardinals, Texas Rangers and New York Yankees. After attending the University of Cincinnati, he made his big league debut on September 6, 1961. His notable career highlights include American League Gold Glove winner in 1972 and American League All Star selection in 1973. In 1,845 career regular season games, he had 1,355 hits with a .224 lifetime batting average. After retiring as a player, Brinkman served as a coach for eight seasons (1979, 1981, 1983 to 1988) with the Tigers, San Diego Padres and Chicago White Sox. His younger brother Chuck was a former Major League catcher during the 1970s.
