Mamie, as she preferred to be called, was the second of five daughters of Patrick Dever and Susanna Harrity Dever.
She was born in Mauch Chunk, which later changed its name to Jim Thorpe after the famous Olympian. The young family settled in Lambertville, Hunterdon Co., New Jersey in 1861, and that is where Mamie grew up.
Mamie never really knew her father, having lost him in the Civil War in 1862. She worked in a flax mill and as a seamstress before her marriage.
She married John E. Shannon, a railroad electrician, on Sep. 3, 1876 at St. John's Roman Catholic Church, Lambertville.
They had a son James, but tragically he died at age 9 months. They never had any more children, but they did take care of Mamie's sister's son Frederick Price.
Mamie was a homemaker after her marriage. Her husband's employment took them to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and then Jersey City, Hudson Co., New Jersey.
After her husband passed away in 1908, she resided on her own in Trenton, taking in relatives from time to time, including her sister Kate. Before her death, Mamie lived with the family of her niece, Margaret Masterson Brahan, at 346 Garfield Avenue, Trenton.
Mamie passed away from edema of the lungs and general anaemia after an illness of three years' duration.
