I had the opportunity to ask Joseph Boyle (recognized Mapes authority, researcher and author): Who were Samuel Mapes parents? His answer:
You have come across a controversy that I don't think can be settled to everyone's satisfaction unless new information is found. Early Mapes researchers placed Samuel as the son of Jonathan, Thomas' youngest son. This was maintained by Frank Mapes Ham in his 1965 book "The Mapes Family in America." However, in 1941 Lester Dunbar Mapes wrote a paper entitled "A Tentative Correction of the Mapes Family LIne" in which he placed Samuel as the son of William Mapes III. As the title says this is tentative because the conclusion is based on conjecture more than facts. Several researchers including myself have stated that the early generations of the Mapes lack definitive proof of many connections so family structure is based somewhat on guesswork. One of the most contemporary accounts of the situation is in a letter from Walter Moore. In this letter (this is reproduced in the introduction to my Mapes books) it states: "The following are the probable children" (sic) "of William and Eunice his wife, as related to Martin Luther Mapes by Silas Haynes Mapes as the brothers and sisters of Samuel senr (viz: Bethuel, William, Henry Benjamin, David, Thomas, Daniel, Samuel senr and 3 sisters--one of whom married William Drake--one a Benjamin and the other unknown to him." Silas Haynes Mapes was one of Samuel's younger sons so these would be his uncles and aunts. Even this has the qualifier "probable children" in it. Without Bible records or church baptismal records, which haven't been found, there is no way to absolutely determine the actual composition of those early families. There is a Bible record for Samuel but it doesn't indicate who his parents were.
There is no right or wrong regarding Samuel's parents but there are differences of opinion. Let us hope that some day someone will find some old papers stored away that will settle the whole controversy.
