A son of William and Catherine Gill, John Richard Gill was born ca. 1835, in Frederick County, Virginia. He served as a private in Co. B, 1st United States Cavalry, and later in Co. G, 2nd Veteran Volunteers.

Interestingly, in postwar years, in one census, he was noted as residing at the home of his sister, Susan, in Page County, Virginia, who happened to be receiving a Confederate Widows Pension for the service of her husband, John W. Gordon, in the Staunton Artillery.

He died on 10/09/1905 and was buried with full honors (likely by the local Mulligan Post), Grand Army of the Republic, at Winchester National Cemetery. Applied 1/25/1886 for pension, application #560,057; Cert # 669.192 - see Co. A, 1st US Cav, Co. I & B, 1st US Cav, Co. G, 2nd USV Vol Cav. Married Mary Jane Stidley (daughter of Robert Stidley), 2/23/1869, Shenandoah County, Virginia.

*Note: Gill's burial next to Pvt. John W. Saylor may be no coincidence (or, perhaps it was considering they died within a year of each other), as both men had connections to Page County, Virginia, and may have been friends before the war, or as a result of possible membership with the local Mulligan G.A.R. Post.
