Stokes K. Shealy

COLUMBIA - Graveside services for Stokes K. Shealy, 82, will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, October 23, 2006, in Bush River Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at Caughman-Harman Funeral Home, Irmo/St. Andrews Chapel.

Mr. Shealy passed away October 19, 2006. Born April 18, 1924, in Batesburg, he was the son of Tally S. Shealy and Nina B. Aull Shealy. He served in the U.S. Air Force. He was a life member of National American Ex-Prisoners of War, a member of Ex-POW, Palmetto Chapter, a life member of the Disabled American Veterans, a life member of American Defenders of Bataan and Corregidor, Inc., a former member of Earlewood Masonic Lodge and a former member of Lake Murray Boating and Sports Club.

During World War II, he served with the 27th Bomb group (L) 454 Ordinance Company in the Philippine Islands. He was captured by the Japanese and held as a POW for 3 1/2 years. He made the infamous Bataan Death March. He was awarded 18 medals including the Bronze Star, POW Medal, Presidential Citation with two Oakleaf Clusters and the American Defense Medal. He was a survivor of the three Japanese "Hell Ships." He worked for The State Record for 16 years and retired from R.E. Custom Boat Trailer Company.

Survivors include his wife, Sandra Rogers Shealy; a son, S. Keith (Linda) Shealy of Columbia; daughters, Pamela (Dale) McMillan of Charleston, Dana (Steve) Asbill of Pennsylvania, Tia (Bert) Sweat of Columbia and Kay (Clay) Harrill of York; sister, Virginia Berry of Batesburg; and five grandchildren, Steven and Ashlan Asbill, Madison Sweat, Seth and Blake Harrill.

Graveside services were conducted on Monday, October 23, 2006.
