While in St. Louis, was editor of the Central Christian Advocate, a Methodist anti-slavery paper. Amassed fortune in cotton trade until all was lost in New Orleans with the Civil War.

Brooks was Chaplain of the First Missouri Artillery during the Civil War and then moved to the Eleventh Missouri Infantry. During 1862, he became Chaplain of the Helena, Arkansas based Thirty-third Missouri Infantry. Brooks organized the African-American units; by 1863, he became Chaplain of the Third Arkansas Infantry, later renamed the Fifty-sixth United States Colored Infantry.
