From a previous reading of his tombstone, the inscription includes:
Died Jan. 10, 1860, Aged 22 Ys. 1 M. 1 D.
This agrees with the mortality schedule prepared along with the 1860 census for Hire Township, McDonough County, which includes an entry to this effect:
Allen Conkey, 21, male, married, born Ohio, died in January, farmer, lung fever & bleeding, ill for 4 weeks
However, Allen was counted in the Federal Census of 1860 (base date June 1), in the household of his wife's parents in Hire Township, McDonough County.
This is one of multiple similar conflicts: individuals were listed on the mortality schedule as having died prior to June 1, 1860, their tombstone inscriptions indicate they died prior to June 1, 1860, but they were also listed on the census pages. It appears that the enumerator for Hire Township did not understand that people who had died in the calendar year preceding the census (June 1, 1859, through May 31, 1860) should not have been included on the regular census pages.
