Stephen Bergman, 80, lifelong resident of Maria Stein and locality, died suddenly about 3 a.m. Sunday at his home in that village. Old age infirmities that affected his heart are believed to have caused his death. He had been ailing for nine years.

Mr. Bergman was claimed by death 15 months after Barney Kalkhoff, a close friend and neighbor from boyhood on, died in Minster. Both men were exactly 80 years and 29 days of age at the time of their passing.

Born May 1, 1852, on a farm one and a half miles south of Maria Stein, Mr. Bergman, a son of (Henry) Arnold and Anna (Evers) Bergmann, both of whom are dead, lived on the home farm until his marriage in February of 1873 to Anna Evers, or St. Rosa.

On Farm 50 Years

After his marriage he transferred his home to an adjoining farm, a quarter-mile nearer Maria Stein, and lived there for 50 years. During this entire time he and Mr. Kalkhoff lived on adjoining farms. Mr. Kalkoff finally retired and came to Minster, and Mr. Bergman moved onto a farm at Maria Stein 12 years ago. He lived there with a daughter Mary and son Henry. Mr. Kalkhoff died Feb. 9, 1931.

Nine years ago, three years after they transferred their residence to Maria Stein and 49 years after their marriage, Mrs. Bergman died. Nine Children are left in addition to 44 grandchildren and one great grandchild. They are in the order of their ages: Henry, at home; Frank, St. Rosa; Mary, at home; John, St. Rosa; George, Maria Stein; Joseph, Maria Stein; Mrs. Rosa Bergman Meiring, Waba; Lawrence, Maria Stein; August, Osgood.

Mr. Bergman was a prosperous farmer whose land holdings mounted with the passing years. He was widely known in the community in which he lived, and was active in supervising the working of his land until several years ago.

He was a lifelong member of St. John's church of Maria Stein, where Rev. Fr. Otto Misaler officiated at the funeral services Thursday at 9:30 a.m. Interment was made in St. John's cemetery.
